When possible, avoid walking alone. Walk with someone, or walk in areas where other people are near.
Stay
in well-lit areas, away from alleys, bushes, and entryways.
Avoid shortcuts through parks, vacant lots,
and other deserted places.
If possible, use the parking garage during periods of high use when others are
around.
If you are being followed, go to the nearest business or residence for help.
Stay
alert when entering your residence. Don't talk on your cell phone or look preoccupied when walking toward your building. Criminals
look for a weak target and are more likely to pass up someone who appears focused, aware and strong.
Keep
your keys handy at all times when walking to your car or home so that you can enter without delay.
Hold
your purse close, not dangling, and avoid carrying extra money or valuables on your person.
Look and see
who is in the elevator before entering. Avoid riding the elevator alone with a stranger. If you feel uncomfortable, do not
enter the elevator, wait for the next one.
Stand beside the control panel in the elevator and know how
to use the emergency alarm button. If a suspicious person enters the elevator, leave before the door closes.
Above
all, be aware of the people around you, and always try to be cognizant of your environment.
